Are you content?

Image © Eldan (http://www.eldan.co.uk/). Katherine Power writes about the science of happiness. Until recently psychology used to have much to say on mental illness, but little about what makes us happy. For the last half century the darker aspects of our mental lives – depression, neurosis, obsessions and paranoia – have been extensively studied, while the positive emotions were largely ignored by science. But thanks to people like American psychologist and writer Martin Seligman, positive emotions are now hot topics in academic circles. Even politicians are taking notice. “Happy politics has arrived,” argues BBC home editor Mark Easton, who believes that politicians are increasingly trying to make us happier, not just richer.

And now, the end is near

Katherine Power looks at a different way out... Not everyone realises that funerals need not involve dark clothes, a hearse and a wooden coffin or an urn. There are other options, and it's appropriate that Brighton, with its reputation as a town of free-thinkers, should be home to ARKA Original Funerals, which offers creative funeral services, advice and information about alternative sites for burial. People are very relieved when they find out they can do things the way they want, tells me funeral director Cara Mair, co-funder of ARKA. We fit with them, rather than make them fit with us.

Reap What You Sow

Image © Eldan (http://www.eldan.co.uk/). Emily Crosby tells Katherine Power about travelling the world by working on organic farms. The WWOOF program allows you to work on an organic farm in exchange for accommodation. You pay for the membership, but that's a small yearly amount - and the rest is free. You get food too, usually amazing, organic and fresh from the ground. It's such a good way of travelling. You gain a lot of knowledge about different lifestyles and a real experience of the country where you’re staying. WWOOFing gets you off the usual backpacker trail. You get all sorts of interesting information about the country’s history from the locals, and your hosts will often show you around themselves.
